about the series

serial experiments lain is a 13-episode anime from 1998. it follows lain iwakura, a quiet, withdrawn 14-year-old girl who gets her first real computer (a navi) after a classmate's strange death... and then starts receiving messages that shouldn't be possible.

the show is all about the wired, a global network a lot like our internet, and protocol 7, the next version of the protocol that runs it. it asks where the network ends and the real world begins. it's slow, eerie, full of humming power lines, and you should watch it at night with the lights off.

layers

• layer:01weird — an e-mail from someone who shouldn't be able to send one.
• layer:02girls — a night at cyberia and a drug called accela.
• layer:03psyche — lain upgrades her navi. a lot.

• layer:13ego — the last layer. no spoilers here, go watch it.
